MONTREAL -- The man known as “the Torturer of the West” was sentenced on Friday to 10 years in prison after he pleaded guilty to raping and impregnating his daughter.
The accused, whose identity cannot be released to protect the victim, pleaded guilty several days ago to confinement, human trafficking, incest and assault.
The daughter testified in 2011 that when she moved into her father’s home, he raped her repeatedly over five years and impregnated her.
She managed to escape her father’s house northwest of Montreal, in 2010.
The accused’s lawyer, Yves Gratton, told the court his client has severe psychological problems and continues to have moments “where he loses his sense of reality.”
The victim, in her 20s, listened to the verdict in a cubicle adjacent to the courtroom. The judge said she was “courageous and resilient.”
The accused has six-and-a-half years left in his sentence due to time served. He will be placed in Canada’s Sex Offender Registry for the next 20 years.
