TORONTO — Toronto police Const. Babak Andalib-Goortani was sentenced to 45 days in jail for assaulting a G20 protester with a weapon.

Andalib-Goortani lowered his head as it became clear Justice Louise Botham would not opt for the absolute discharge his lawyer Harry Black had passionately advocated for during the Monday hearing.

Jail time was the only deterrent strong enough to send a message that police are not above the law, the judge said.

Botham didn't believe that testimony.
