A Texas teenager who killed four people while driving drunk won't get any jail time after his defence argued he's a poor little rich kid and isn't responsible for his actions.

A judge on Tuesday sentenced 16-year-old Ethan Couch to 10 years' probation, the Dallas-Forth Worth CBS affiliate station reports.

Couch's blood-alcohol level was three times the limit on June 15, when he plowed a pickup truck into four pedestrians on their way to help another motorist who'd ended up in a ditch, according to the report.

An expert testified that Couch was raised a spoiled brat who was allowed to drink at a very young age and start driving at 13, and his parents are responsible for his behaviour.

Couch will go to an expensive private treatment facility, as recommended by his lawyers.
