CALGARY — Refusing to “gamble with the public’s safety,” a judge on Thursday ordered convicted torturer Dustin Paxton to serve an indeterminate prison term after declaring him a dangerous offender.

Judge Sheilah Martin said there was insufficient evidence that the danger Paxton poses to the community could be significantly reduced by treatment during a specific time period.

Martin ruled Paxton meets the criteria for being declared a dangerous offender for his abuse of his former business partner and roommate between October 2008 and April 2010.
