WINNIPEG -- After allegedly assaulting and carjacking an elderly couple, police say a 20-year-old Winnipeg man went on a drunken rampage that came to a halt only after he was tasered by police.

Police say a couple in their 60s were leaving a downtown restaurant when they were approached by the intoxicated man. It is alleged that he assaulted the couple and demanded their keys.

At least two people attempted to help the couple, but police say he threatened to kill them and eventually made off with the couple's car.

The man was traveling east on Portage Avenue when police cars spotted him and attempted to stop him.

This proved difficult as the man rammed into a police cruiser and another car, according to cops.

"This individual was making every effort possible to evade police," police spokesman Const. Jason Michalyshen said.

Police were able to stop the vehicle, at which time they had to use a Taser in order to subdue the man.

"This was definitely a volatile situation," Michalyshen said. "We have an intoxicated man behind the wheel of the a stolen vehicle, putting officers and the public at risk."

Police arrested the man and said he had over double the legal amount of alcohol in his blood.

Cody Bushie, 20, faces several offences including robbery, assault, four counts of uttering threats, and flight while pursued by a peace officer.
