Three burglars who made an unusually high number of phone calls after a three-year-old British girl went missing from a Portugal resort in 2007 are the main suspects in her disappearance, British media report.

London police now need the help of their Portuguese counterparts to arrest the men, the Mirror and Daily Mail report.

Madeleine McCann went missing from a Praia da Luz resort on Portugal's southern coast in May 2007 while her parents were having dinner with friends a short distance away.

The newspaper said police believe the men accidentally woke Madeleine during a break in and decided to take her.

In October, Portuguese newspaper the Correio de Manha reported the main suspect was a former employee at the resort's restaurant who died in a tractor accident in 2009. Police never commented on this report and a spokesman for the McCann family called it "pure speculation."
