EDMONTON ─ A man accused of running over a Mountie with a truck and exchanging gunfire with police at a farm outside Edmonton Monday night remains in hospital and will not be charged until his condition has stabilized.

The man, suffering gunshot wounds, is still receiving medical attention in Edmonton hospital, RCMP spokesperson Sgt. Josee Valiquette said. And the Mountie who suffered multiple crush injuries underwent an anticipated four hours of surgery Tuesday morning, but no update on his condition has been provided.

The drama unfolded when Mounties from Tofield, Alta., and Vegreville, Alta., went to a rural residence around 4 p.m. Monday to question the homeowner and his girlfriend about an acquaintance believed to be responsible for numerous thefts and break-ins throughout the area.
