An Italian man has admitted to killing his Irish landlord over a disagreement during a chess game.

In court Monday, Saverio Bellante, 34, admitted to stabbing and mutilating the body of Tom O'Gorman, 39, late Saturday or early Sunday morning, the Independent newspaper reported.

Police said they were called to a north Dublin home at 1:50 a.m. Sunday and discovered O'Gorman's body.

The Independent said the crime scene was so gruesome, officers are expected to need counselling.

The U.K. Sun reported Bellante allegedly ripped out one of O'Gorman's lungs and tried to eat it. A police source told the paper when officers entered the home, "it was like walking through the gates of hell."

The Associated Press report said Bellante told police he had tried to eat O'Gorman's heart.

Bellante, who is originally from Sicily, represented himself in court.

While in custody Monday, police said Bellante stated, "I am guilty."
