A 14-year-old boy was convinced he was under arrest as a family friend allegedly kidnapped him.

The suspect met with the boy Jan. 11. The suspect told the boy he was investigating a report of assault — and that the boy was a suspect.

The boy was taken to a downtown hotel; his phone was taken away and he was told that he had to stay in the hotel room to avoid going to jail.

The suspect produced a pellet handgun at some point, too, to further convince the boy that he was a police officer.

The suspect then left the boy in the room and went to his family's home, leaving an anonymous note — saying that the son had been kidnapped, and if money wasn't provided, he would be harmed.

Police investigation led to an arrest.

Harpreet Singh Kanda, 19, has been charged with impersonating a police officer, extortion, possession of a weapon, kidnapping using a firearm, and carrying a concealed weapon.
