CALGARY — A man who viciously assaulted his girlfriend after reciting scripture to her was insane at the time of the attack, a judge ruled Tuesday.

Judge Allan Fradsham found Samuel Mark Menard, 31, not guilty because he suffers from severe bipolar affective disorder and didn’t know what he was doing was wrong.

On March 2, Menard was hospitalized after calling 911 and saying he wanted to kill himself.

He was released from Rocky View hospital several hours later after denying further suicidal thoughts and he and his girlfriend Nicole Gallaway went to a movie.

Later, back at their home, “Menard then began having an episode where he put on religious clothing and began reciting scripture to (her),” the agreed statement of facts says.
