OTTAWA — Gregory Armstrong was sentenced Tuesday to 60 days in jail for putting a barbecue spit through a mother raccoon’s head in June.

Armstrong, 49, was sentenced shortly after pleading guilty to animal cruelty. He also admitted to bludgeoning a baby raccoon to death with a hammer.

Judge Jack Nadelle condemned the “completely unnecessary and gruesome violence” as he handed down the sentence, which also includes 18 months of probation.

Armstrong killed the mother raccoon after trapping it in a cage a day earlier.

Investigators and the Ottawa Humane Society had called for the maximum sentence of five years in prison.

The Crown, however, asked for a nine- to 12-month jail sentence, while the defence asked for a 60-day sentence.

The defence argued Armstrong had been on the losing end of a battle against raccoons infesting the south-end home where he sleeps on a buddy’s couch.
