Lac La Biche RCMP have arrested and charged a 62-year-old man — who worked as a self contractor to Canada Post — for stealing large quantities of mail, including 21 new cell phones.

Brian Sopel, was charged on Jan. 29 with theft of mail and possession of articles stolen from the mail.

Sopel was a delivery driver at the Canada Post mail plant in Edmonton, and delivered parcels to numerous rural post offices in northern Alberta.

Among the cell phones, RCMP found laptops, a tablet, Military Veteran paraphernalia, clothing, other consumer goods and storage containers owned by Canada Post

"A number of people had been complaining that they ordered stuff online, and that their orders had been shipped, but not received," said Lac La Biche RCMP Cst. Chris Clark.

The arrest was a result of a joint investigation between Lac La Biche RCMP and Postal Inspectors from Canada Post.
