TORONTO -- Neighbours and schoolmates are mourning the loss of a little girl and wondering what happened in a Scarborough, Ont., hotel room that cost the six-year-old her life and sent her brother and father to hospital.

Toronto Police said officers were led to Howard Johnson Inn and Suites near Warden Ave. and Hwy. 401, after responding first to a nearby residence around 4 p.m. on Monday.

"Officers arrived to find a child in obvious distress and, unfortunately, that child was later pronounced dead at hospital," Const. Sarah Diamond said Tuesday.

Homicide detectives are investigating the incident, which also saw a young boy and a man rushed to hospital in serious condition.

But the initial autopsy results proved "inconclusive," so exactly how the girl died remains a mystery.

Police remained quiet as they awaited the results of toxicology testing and continued to guard the hotel room as a potential crime scene.
