MIAMI – A naked man killed by police after he went on a rampage and bit another man's face earlier this week "appeared to be in a state of psychosis," Palm Beach sheriff's office said.
The assailant was identified late on Wednesday as Anesson Joseph, 28, but police said autopsy and toxicology reports were still pending.
The tall, powerfully built Joseph went on a rampage on Tuesday, attacking retired New York City police officer Douglas Kozlik, and biting 18-year-old Tony Grein, leaving teeth marks on his face and ear, police said.
Police found Joseph naked around 8:30 p.m. on Tuesday. He immediately began fighting with officers who tried to subdue him with a Taser "to no effect," according to a Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office press release.
Another officer, now on leave, shot Joseph three times, but he continued to "flail and try to get up," police said. He was taken to a nearby hospital, where he died.
Grein's injuries required five stitches and both he and Kozlick were released from the hospital on Wednesday.
The attack recalled a ghoulish 2012 incident in Miami, when 31-year-old Rudy Eugene stripped naked and in broad daylight savagely attacked an elderly homeless man, biting off chunks of his face.
It was initially thought Eugene was driven crazy by 'bath salts,' the street name for a synthetic stimulant called methylone, but an autopsy report revealed only marijuana in his system. Miami police said that a stun gun failed to stop him.
