Grandpa gets 7 years for sex assault on 3rd grandchild

WINNIPEG - A Manitoba senior convicted for the third time of sexually violating one of his grand-daughters has been sentenced to seven years in prison.

The 69-year-old man pleaded guilty to a single incident of incest with his then six-year-old granddaughter in 2010. A court-ordered publication ban prohibits naming the man or the First Nation where the offence took place.

"My mind was not working right," the man told Justice Gerald Chartier before promising "it will never happen again."

A sentencing hearing was derailed last week after the man denied he repeatedly assaulted the girl. He returned to court Thursday and pleaded guilty to a single incident of incest and received the same sentence Crown and defence lawyers previously agreed to recommend.

Court heard community members pressured the victim's mother to keep quiet so as not to bring unwanted attention to the community.
