OTTAWA ─ Mexican police have made an arrest in the murder of an Ontario couple last weekend.

Long-time Ottawa resident Nina Discombe, 72, and her partner Edward Kular, 84, were found dead Sunday morning in their home in Ajijic, about 55 kilometres southeast of Guadalajara. On Wednesday afternoon, police in the town confirmed one person had been arrested, though the suspect's sex, name and age were not released.

Police said they were not expecting to arrest anyone else, but the investigation was continuing. Police refused to confirm online reports the suspect was a 31-year-old construction worker working next door to Kular and Discombe's property.

While the news has shocked many and devastated those close to the couple, ex-pats who have spent time in Mexico were quick to defend the country.

"We never felt like we were in danger," said Rose Calvin, an Ottawa woman who spent 10 winters in Mexico with her late husband.
