TORONTO ─ Ontario’s police watchdog is investigating after an 18-year-old woman was struck and killed by a police vehicle.

The Special Investigations Unit says the teenaged pedestrian was crossing north to south on St. Clair Ave. E. west of Warden Ave. when she was struck by an unmarked vehicle heading east, with an on-duty York Regional Police officer in the driver's seat, around 8:20 p.m. Wednesday night.

"The woman was pronounced dead at the scene," an SIU news release said.

By Thursday morning, the scene was blocked off with yellow crime tape and atleast three Toronto Police cruisers guarded the scene.

The SIU announced it has assigned seven investigators, two forensic investigators, and a collision reconstructionist to investigate the circumstances of the death.
