TORONTO -- The Obit Bandits have now committed at least nine robberies in three jurisdictions around the GTA.
Peel Regional Police investigators are the latest to reveal the heartless crooks, who spring into action after people leave home to attend a loved one’s funeral, have struck in their region.
“We’ve had three in Peel in the past few weeks,” Const. Thomas Ruttan said Wednesday.
Peel officers, like those in Toronto and Halton, suspect the thieves are choosing their targets by scanning local obituaries.
“Our investigators have liaised with police in the other jurisdictions,” Ruttan said.
Toronto Police believe the obit bandits have targeted at least three homes in North York so far, but investigators are also looking into numerous other break-and-enters in the city.
Meanwhile, Halton officers have revealed some details that suggest they may be closing in on the thieves, including a suspect description.
