EDMONTON — Cops seized three 10-litre containers of the date-rape drug and charged a 31-year-old man after a distracted driving traffic stop Tuesday night.

Edmonton cops were in a marked police car when they saw the driver of a 2004 BMV X5 who appeared to be texting.

They stopped the SUV and noted that there was the smell of fresh marijuana emanating from the vehicle.

It was also determined that the driver was the registered owner of the vehicle, and was under a judicial recognizance order prohibiting him from possessing a cellphone or handheld device.

Police then seized three 10-litre containers filled with gamma-hydroxybutyrate (GHB), also known as the date-rape drug, 756 grams of marijuana, the SUV, and about $1,000 in cash.

Ryan David Getschel has been charged with two counts possession for the purposes of trafficking, possession of proceeds of crime, use of handheld electronic device, and three counts of breach of recognizance.
