ORILIA, Ont. — Paul DeVries, a Warminster, Ont., man who drugged kids in his care so he could sexually assault them, has been sentenced to five years in prison.

His victims still have nightmares about the man they knew as “Uncle Paul” their parents told a Barrie, Ont., courtroom during victim impact statements at his sentencing hearing on Friday.

"Nightmares about Paul escaping from prison and breaking into our house,” said one mother.

DeVries, 36, would regularly babysit children at his home, where he lived with his father in 2011. A trusted friend to the parents of the children, he would invite the children and their friends over for sleepovers.

That's when he would drug them with lemonade spiked with sleeping pills, and assault them.

"They were stupefied and defenceless," assistant Crown attorney Greg Barker said during the sentencing hearing in January.
