OTTAWA — The University of Ottawa has suspended its men’s hockey team because of allegations of a gang sexual assault in Thunder Bay, Ont.

Sources told QMI Agency the alleged assault occurred while the team was playing games at Lakehead University. The Gee-Gees were most recently in Thunder Bay on Jan. 31 and Feb. 1.

The alleged victim is a woman who knows one of the Ottawa players. Sources say several players were allegedly involved, but so far no arrests have been made and no charges have been laid.

The victim hasn’t been co-operating with police in Thunder Bay, who are leading the investigation. The allegations came to light when a “third party” informed senior management at the University of Ottawa’s sports services department on Feb. 24.

Police were called the next day.

“The incident occurred several weeks ago,” the school said in a press release Monday. “The university is deeply concerned that senior management was only informed about these allegations on February 24, and then by a third party. This will be among the matters examined in the review.”
