WINNIPEG — A woman who left her two-year-old daughter and four-year-old disabled son alone in a filthy, bug-infested apartment so she could go out drinking was sentenced Tuesday to one year of house arrest.

Judge Tracey Lord rejected a Crown recommendation the woman, now 22, be sentenced to six months in jail. Lord ruled the mother has made great efforts to turn her life around in the 16 months since her arrest.

She previously pleaded guilty to child abandonment.

Court heard she left her children alone in separate rooms on Nov. 22, 2012, and then went to the Marion Hotel to celebrate her 21st birthday.

A short time later, an anonymous tipster called Child and Family Services (CFS), who alerted police.
