OTTAWA — The stabbing of a 44-year-old Russian diplomat is not believed to have been politically motivated and was more likely the result of a drunken argument that turned violent.

A military man was arrested after the melee broke out shortly after 8 a.m. at a downtown apartment building located about two blocks north of the Russian embassy.

Sources say the diplomat was drinking with another man in an apartment when a knife was pulled.

The diplomat was slashed in the arm and back, and he left a bloody trail to lobby, where emergency crews found him.

He was unco-operative and belligerent with police and paramedics, initially telling responders his slash wounds were dog bites.

His injuries were not life-threatening, but he was taken to hospital for treatment.
