OTTAWA — Police have charged a 72-year-old man after he allegedly dragged a German shepherd behind his pickup truck for about a kilometre Sunday night.

Witnesses in the city’s rural east end called 911 and officers tracked down the truck and the injured animal, police said.

When police went to the suspect’s home, he had already left for the animal hospital, Staff Sgt. Mike Zackrias said.

Cops arrested Adrien Paquette and charged him with injuring an animal, neglecting an animal and three counts of uttering threats.

Reached at his home Monday afternoon, Paquette denied the allegations.

“That dog was not towed behind the truck,” he said. “That’s all I got to tell ya.”

Chantal Benoit and her husband said they witnessed what happened.
