OTTAWA — Russia’s ambassador to Canada says he will not order the diplomat stabbed Friday to return to Canada because he “won’t risk his life twice.”
Andrey Gorobets was stabbed early Friday morning at a condo near the Russian embassy. He was transferred back to Moscow, where he is recovering in hospital.
Ambassador Georgiy Mamedov told reporters Tuesday he wouldn’t bring Gorobets back to Canada — even if it would help the Crown’s case against Kevin Martin, 32, an employee of the Department of National Defence who was charged with aggravated assault.
“I trust Canadian authorities,” Mamedov said. “I love Canadian authorities, I respect Canadian authorities, but I won’t risk his life twice.”
Mamedov said he wasn’t sure what prompted the attack, adding that Gorobets doesn’t even speak English. The ambassador said Gorobets suffered from “10 wounds.”
Martin was released on bail Monday.
