Police investigating the disappearance of Madeleine McCann say they're looking for a man who broke into homes in Portugal and sexually abused young girls.

Police said a man broke into 12 homes and sexually assaulted five girls in their beds in Portugal between 2004 and 2010.

"We need to establish the identity of this man," Det. Chief Insp. Andy Redwood told the BBC.

"These offences are very serious and no one has been charged in connection with them. We also need to eliminate this man from our enquiries and ascertain whether these offences are linked to Madeleine's disappearance."

Madeleine was three when she went missing from a Praia da Luz resort on Portugal's southern coast in May 2007 while her parents were having dinner with friends a short distance away.

Two of the suspects 12 offences occurred in Praia da Luz, police said.
