NEWMARKET, Ont. -- Jennifer Pan's brother was oblivious to the string of lies and deception his beloved sister strung to her family -- until after she was charged with hiring armed thugs to kill their parents, a court heard Monday.

Pan, 27, and four men are on trial charged with first-degree murder in the death of her mom, Bich Pan, and the attempted murder of her father, Hann Pan.

On Nov. 8, 2010, the parents were held at gunpoint and ordered to the basement of their Markham, Ont., home, where the mother was shot in the back and head, and the father was shot in the back and face but somehow survived.
