BRAMPTON, Ont. - The hearts of Peel police officers go out to a second victim wounded by Friday’s incident in the Davis Courthouse.

The six-year-old daughter of Charnjit “Sonny” Bassi — the man shot and killed by police.

And even though her father shot Const. Mike Klarenbeek, several police officers here say they have great “concern and empathy” for a little girl whose father tried to enter the courthouse with a gun.

“The children are often the victims in such things,” said an officer. “Peel police have a soft spot for children. This child has been top of mind since the beginning of this.”

Her safety. Her well being. Her future.

Rishi Singh Bhasin, the lawyer representing Bassi’s former wife, reached out to the Toronto Sun Tuesday, saying while he was not aware of the heartfelt sentiments toward his client and her daughter from police, he would have more to say Wednesday.

Other than indicating he’ll make a statement on their behalf, Bhasin did not tip his hand, saying only it “will be a comment” from the family.

Their state of mind and their whereabouts, he said, would not be discussed until then. He said it is his understanding a funeral for Bassi is being planned for Thursday.

Meanwhile, as Klarenbeek continues to recover in Sunnybrook hospital from a gunshot wound to the abdomen, he was talking to pals on the job Tuesday.

Neighbours noted since the shooting, that the mother and daughter, who lived just down the street from Bassi, have not been seen.

Police are not ruling out any motive for 45-year-old Bassi’s actions.

The SIU is also investigating if police used appropriate force in this case.

But the real head scratcher remains what motivated Bassi to go to the court with a gun?
