Teen charged in four-year-old's death

TORONTO -- A Toronto teen has been charged in the death of a four-year-old boy in Bowmanville, Ont., last summer, police announced Friday.

The boy was found in a Bowmanville home without vital signs on Aug. 28, after Durham Regional Police were called there.

He was declared dead in hospital.

An autopsy revealed the boy -- who lived in Toronto but was in the care of a family friend at the time of his death -- died from multiple blunt-force trauma, police said.

Police subsequently declared the death homicide.

A 16-year-old was arrested in Toronto Thursday and charged with manslaughter, but cannot be identified under the Youth Criminal Justice Act.

Tanya Berlass, 35, of Toronto, was charged in March with failing to provide the necessities of life. She was released on bail is awaiting trial.

Police said no further arrests are expected in the case.
