OTTAWA -- The woman charged with killing Jagtar Gill was suspected of having an affair with the Barrhaven mom's husband, according to a family friend.

Gurpreet Ronald, 34, a striking married mother of two, is charged with the first-degree murder of Gill, 43.

She lived 100 metres away from the Brambling Rd. home where Gill was stabbed to death Jan. 29.

The charges have stunned neighbours and family friends in the close-knit Sikh community.

"In our community, it's devastating," said Balraj Dhillion, who knows both families. "It's put shame on our community. This has ruined so many families."

Ronald has been a driver at OC Transpo for seven years. Gill's husband, Bhupinderpal, is a co-worker.

Ronald's husband, Jason, also recently completed training to become an OC Transpo bus driver, where several other Gill relatives also work.

The bus company is offering support to anyone in need.

"We are as shocked as anyone," said Craig Watson, head of OC Transpo's biggest union. "It's tough for us. It involves everybody here."

Both families had known for several months that the pair had been seeing each other, according to a family friend.

He said the relationship is suspected of going on for as long as four years, although Bhupinderpal denied it to reporters Wednesday.

It was the Gills' 17th wedding anniversary. Bhupinderpal and their oldest daughter were out buying cake and flowers when Gill was killed inside her home.
