OTTAWA — Bus driver Bhupinderpal Gill, 38, is accused of murdering his wife Jagtar on their 17th wedding anniversary.

His neighbour, co-worker and rumoured lover Gurpreet Ronald, 34, was also charged with first-degree murder last week.

Rumours swirled in the Sikh community that Ronald — a married mother of two — and Bhupinderpal were romantically involved and family friends said it had been going on for as long as four years.

In fact, on Monday, the slain woman’s father, Ajit Singh, said the arranged marriage between the Gills had soured.

“They were not happy,” he said.

Jagtar Gill, 43, a mother of three, was found dead in her upscale home in the city’s south end on Jan. 29.

She had been home alone, recovering from a recent medical procedure.

Police originally said Bhupinderpal and teenage daughter Dilpreet found Jagtar’s body with several slashes across her neck and arms.

Bhupinderpal appeared in court Monday. His lawyer asked that the hearing be put over until Wednesday, when Ronald would also appear.

Lawyers for both accused have said they are likely to seek bail for their clients.
