CALGARY -- There's no funeral to plan, but these are parents overcome with grief.

Their child is an accused monster, charged with the worst mass killing in Calgary history -- but to see the grim faces of Doug and Susan de Grood on Thursday was to see a mother and father in anguish, mourning over their son.

Charged with coldly murdering five young people with a knife, Matthew de Grood is now in solitary psychiatric detention, awaiting a court appearance slated for next week.

He's isolated in custody, but his heartbroken parents are the ones who look utterly alone.

"We'll never recover from this," said Doug de Grood, standing with his wife outside the Beltline office of his son's lawyer.
