CALGARY - Peter Landsborough cringed as he watched the video footage, just grateful the motorcycle tourist being robbed at gunpoint in Guatemala likely wasn’t his son.

If only Landsborough had been right.

“Oh my god — that was him? Honest to god, I just saw that the other day, and I was wondering if that was him,” said Landsborough.

“I thought, it couldn’t be.”

But it was Landsborough’s own flesh and blood being threatened with a machete and gun — and now the video taken by Calgarian Dan Landsborough is being watched around the world, with the entire terrifying highway robbery captured on the Canadian traveller’s motorcycle helmet.

It starts as the 34-year-old Alberta oilsands worker is riding along a rough wilderness road in the Central American country, his British girlfriend Heidi Burton sitting pillion.

Up ahead, a dark figure can be seen emerging from the bushes, and as the bike brakes as a precaution, a second bandit leaps from the trees beside the bike waving a machete, forcing the Kawasaki to stop.

“The guy ahead of us ran out of the bushes and pointed a gun at us, the guy to the right had a machete,” wrote Dan on his YouTube page.

It’s a frantic robbery from there, with the balaclava-clad banditos demanding cash and valuables — and the tourists weren’t about to argue.

The bad guys can be seen collecting Dan’s wallet and hacking the bike’s tank bag away with a machete, before the bike is allowed to move on.

It appears to be a lucrative haul for the criminals — but appearances, as well as seasoned travellers, can be deceiving.
