Two Paris police officers - a captain and a major - have been charged with allegedly raping a Canadian tourist.

The 34-year-old Toronto woman met four officers in a pub on April 22 and took up an offer to see the police headquarters nearby, an iconic building located along the Seine River. It is there she alleges the four officers sexually assaulted her in an office.

Two of the officers were charged on the weekend, Le Monde newspaper reported, while a third is being considered an assisted witness - a person with key information, but not necessarily a suspect. The fourth was released Saturday without charge.

All four officers are a member of a gang crime unit.

In court on the weekend, one of the officers admitted to having sexual contact with the woman, but said it was consensual.

The three officers were suspended on Sunday, Minister of the Interior Bernard Cazeneuve said in a statement.
