Local reports say two people are dead after a shooting at a Nanaimo, B.C., sawmill Wednesday morning.

Police said they received a report around 7 a.m. about shots fired at Western Forest Products, and that four people were injured and transported to hospital.

Police said they took a suspect into custody at the scene.

Sarah Plank, of Island Health, confirmed that one victim was airlifted to Victoria General Hospital and was in critical condition, while another was in stable condition at Nanaimo Regional General Hospital. She was unable to provide details about the two other victims but referred calls to "the RCMP or the coroner." The B.C. coroner's office refused to comment.

Local TV station CHEK News reported it confirmed two died.

A spokesman for the Nanaimo Port Authority, on whose property the mill is located, said the port authority was alerted by an internal communications system.

"It's a large site ... and our personnel did not hear the shots," Cpt. Edward Dahlgren told QMI Agency. "Our security guards responded to the incident, provided first aid waiting the arrival of first responders. We're actively engaged in our security posture right now."

A receptionist at Van-Kam Freightways, located right next to the mill, confirmed that some employees heard shots fired, but she declined to comment any further.

Multiple police vehicles and ambulances attended the scene and an air ambulance was called in, according to several local reports.

Nanaimo is on the southeast coast of Vancouver Island.
