A young woman was beaten and tortured and held captive for hours after one of her attackers was told she belonged to the same gang that had killed his father, a court heard Thursday.

"This conduct was abhorrent and needs to be strongly denounced," said Judge Marvin Garfinkel before sentencing Jordan Cooper to four years in prison.

Cooper, a 23-year-old aspiring rapper, pleaded guilty to two counts of assault with a weapon, forcible confinement and uttering threats.

"Maybe he's somebody who has some talent but he's somebody who is wasting it," said Crown attorney Libby Standil, who recommended Cooper be sentenced to six years in prison.

Court heard the 19-year-old victim had attended a "gathering" at a McGee Street apartment March 16, 2013, when around 10 p.m. another woman pointed her out to Cooper and identified her as a member of the Indian Posse street gang.

"What commences is a vicious beating that took place over several hours," Standil said.
