Detectives are searching a family home in the far west-end after a woman and her daughter were attacked with a butcher knife late Saturday night.

It happened just after 11 p.m. near Ashton when sources say a man attacked his wife and daughter.

The girl's finger was cut off and another next to it nearly severed, but police were able to find the finger and rushed it to the Civic trauma centre where it was successfully re-attached.

Both victims are recovering in hospital and were otherwise not seriously hurt.

When asked for a comment, Insp. John Maxwell would only confirm there was an ongoing investigation.

"An arrest has been made and there is no danger to the public," he said. "We will not be releasing any further information."

Sources say the woman and daughter were taken by paramedics to the Civic trauma centre in critical condition where the surgery was performed.

The suspect was arrested at a neighbour's house around the corner.

More to come.

DOMESTIC ATTACKS IN 2014

Saturday night's knife attack is the third violent domestic incident in Ottawa this year.

April 2, 2014: Realtor Christopher Hoare stands accused of taking a baseball bat to his wife in an attempt to kill her.

The evidence, now before court, is protected by a standard publication ban.

It has already been reported that Hoare was arrested at his Orléans home shortly after the alleged bat attack on his wife.

He is charged with attempted murder.

January 29, 2014: Bhupinderpal Gill stands accused of playing a role in the slaying of his wife Jagtar Gill.

Cops allege Gurpreet Ronald did the killing but both she and Gill face first-degree murder charges.

Initially, the bereaved husband was thought to have been a victim of tragedy. He had left the family home with his 15-year-old daughter -- eldest of three children -- to buy flowers and cake for the couple's anniversary on Jan. 29.

It was his daughter who then found the stabbed and beaten body of her mother, who was already frail from a medical procedure.

Police believe Bhupinderpal was party to the deadly plot, perhaps due to a rumoured affair between him and the co-accused, herself a married mother of two.
