As he languishes in jail, young Christopher Gobin may take some solace in knowing his family still loves him very much.

Accused of murdering his mother, Luce Lavertu, in their Orléans home last month, the 18-year-old made a brief court appearance by video Tuesday.

The teen with a tousled mop of curly hair stared out from the video monitor as his father, Jacques Gobin, laid eyes on him for the first time since the April 22 killing.

"This is the only opportunity I have of seeing my son," the sombre man said afterwards. "It is very hard, though, of course, to see him this way."

The family is preparing to visit Chris in jail on Friday.

They have a message for him.

"I will tell him I love him," Gobin said. "My mother will be there as well -- and she's very much a mother hen. So she will also express a similar sentiment to him on Friday."
