MONTREAL — Two children tried everything to stop their father from killing their mother in front of them, but they couldn't prevent the murder, court heard.

"We beat Dad, we shouted, but Dad was too strong," one of the young children told police, according to Crown lawyer Genevieve Dagenais.

The child went on to say: "Dad left us. Now we're alone."

Franklin Bencosme Lora, 48, stabbed wife Esther Ramirez Lluvia Gomez 18 times on Feb. 1, 2013, in their Montreal home, the court heard.

The Crown said the children, aged six and seven, witnessed everything.

"They saw the blood on the floor. They touched their mother, tried to move her, to call the police," Dagenais told the court Tuesday as Lora pleaded guilty to second-degree murder.

Superior Court Judge Marc David sentenced him to life in prison with no parole for 17 years.
