OTTAWA — Over a year after a jury convicted her of aggravated assault for stabbing her soldier boyfriend Patrick Halcro — who had moments earlier bashed her head off a doorframe — a judge refused to send Ashley White to jail.

"It is likely a very rare set of circumstances that would allow the imposition of a probationary period for a stabbing," Judge Lynn Ratushny told her Thursday. "I have determined that this is one of those rare cases."

On July 14, 2010, Halcro and White’s relationship ended badly.

Halcro — a soldier with post-traumatic stress disorder following a stint in Afghanistan — had stopped taking his medication so he could booze.
