A New York City teacher is recovering after two of her Grade 4 students allegedly put rat poison into her water bottle.

The two boys, aged nine and 12, have been charged with attempted second-degree assault, reckless endangerment and criminal possession of a weapon, CNN reports.

The poison is being tested to determine exactly what it is, but Sgt. John Buthorn said it's believed to be rat poison.

The Brooklyn teacher drank the tainted water on Monday and felt nauseous. The New York Post reported after she started to feel ill, another student told her what had happened.

She was treated by her doctor and reported it to police on Tuesday.

Police did not release a possible motive.
