TORONTO -- A killer who torched himself after slitting his girlfriend's throat and setting her ablaze has committed suicide in jail, QMI Agency has learned.

Farshad "Shawn" Badakhshan, 31, hanged himself at Metro West Detention Centre on Thursday, almost four weeks after a jury found him guilty of second-degree murder in the July 2, 2010, slaying of Carina Petrache, 23.

Petrache's family declined to be interviewed, saying they wanted the media to respect their privacy.

Badakhshan suffered burns to 75% of his body in his attack on the Ryerson University criminology student. His left leg had to be amputated above the knee.

Homicide Det. Scott Whittemore said he had been informed of the killer's apparent suicide, which is being investigated.

Badakhshan's death will be scrutinized at a coroner's inquest.

"This suicide confirms his manipulative nature," said Crown attorney Jennifer Lofft, who prosecuted Badakhshan for first-degree murder.

"He tried his luck before the justice system to see if he could be declared not criminally responsible (due to mental disorder), so he could be sent to a psychiatric hospital rather than spending his life in prison as a murderer," Lofft said in an interview Monday.
