OTTAWA — A couple is accused of sexually assaulting two 16-year-old girls with a metre stick and a sex toy earlier this month, in what police are calling a "very unusual" case.

Antonio Comunale, 31, and Caroline Budd, 20, are charged with two counts each of sexual assault, sexual assault with a weapon, assault with a weapon and forcible confinement.

The alleged assaults occurred over the long weekend, on May 17 and 18.

The teens reported the incidents to police on May 22, saying they had been sexually assaulted by a man and a woman at a home in the west end.

The suspects and victims all knew each other.

In one incident, there was only one teen present, while in the other incident both girls were there, police said.

Police searched a west-end home Thursday morning.

Neighbours of the couple expressed surprise at the allegations.

"They're a regular family," said a neighbour of the Budds, where Caroline lives with her parents at the home she grew up in.
