LONDON, Ont. -- The burly man with the shaved head, who once ran London's Marconi Club, made a surprise second trip to the witness box at Mayor Joe Fontana's criminal trial.
The question put to Joe DiPietro, who was recalled by the Crown, was simple -- but with enormous implications.
"Was he on vacation in February 2005?" he was asked Thursday, before the four-day trial wrapped.
His answer -- no -- contradicts defence evidence from one of Fontana's longtime friends.
That inconsistency suggests some credibility issues with the evidence given by Fontana's friend of 40 years, Vince Trovato, the former president of the social club. He's testified he handled rental hall arrangements key to the case for Fontana, then a longtime Liberal MP and cabinet minister, because DiPietro was on vacation.
It was a final shocker Thursday, after four days of bombshells in the trial.
