Two women from Liverpool, England, have been sentenced to a year in jail after a 79-year-old man was "literally eaten alive" by a dog.
Court heard Clifford Clarke was in his back garden in May 2013 when the dog, which hadn't been fed for 45 hours, attacked him.
"Mr. Clarke was literally eaten alive when large amounts of tissue were ingested by the dog and that is a very shocking, appalling and tragic event," Judge Mark Brown told the court, the Liverpool Echo reported.
The dog belonged to Della Woods, 30, who was visiting Clarke's neighbour, Hayley Sulley, 30, the day of the attack. The two women pleaded guilty to breaking dangerous dogs legislation and causing unnecessary suffering to animals.
The large-breed dog, a presa canario named Charlie, was so hungry it had already eaten a plastic bowl and cigarette butts, Brown heard.
The dog also tried to bite the end of a rifle police eventually used to kill it.
