QUEBEC CITY — Police are scouring private airstrips and helipads as they hunt for three alleged murderers who used a helicopter to break out of jail near Quebec City.

Yves Denis, 25, Denis Lefebvre, 53, and Serge Pomerleau, 49, used a hijacked helicopter to escape from Orsainville Detention Centre on Sunday.

Quebec provincial police are searching for places the green Robinson R44 chopper could have refuelled.

Marcel Boutin, the official Robinson R44 dealer in Quebec, said it's very easy to camouflage a small helicopter with temporary paint.

Boutin used the example of a brewery that painted a helicopter yellow before "dousing it with water that returned (it) to its original colour."

Witnesses described a white cross on the belly of the R44. Boutin says the cross was almost certainly used to camouflage the chopper's model letters.

It's the second time in 15 months that inmates have used a helicopter to break out of a Quebec jail.
