TORONTO — A Mississauga, Ont., man is accused of stealing $11,000 in cancer donations from a fundraiser at a Hamilton, Ont., hotel on Saturday.

Police said the suspect took a cash box during a charity dinner at the Sheraton Hotel after the Ride to Conquer Cancer.

Security cameras captured footage of the suspect leaving the event with the box, police said.

Officers received several tips from the public after they appealed for help locating the suspect.

Officers arrested the suspect at a downtown Hamilton hotel on Tuesday.

“After he was arrested, police sought and received a search warrant for the hotel room he had rented and recovered a portion of the stolen cash from there,” Det.-Const. Greg Slack said.

Brian Ross Peebles is charged with theft over $5,000 and possession of stolen property over $5,000.
