CALGARY - Where's the beef?

That's what Mounties are asking after 59 mixed-breed heifers were stolen from a rural property near Czar, Alta., about 360 km northeast of Calgary.

Police say the cows, worth about $80,000 at today's cattle prices, were noticed missing during a monthly headcount.

The owners searched land and air for the cows, which roamed free on an 80-acre parcel of land, but came up empty.

Police believe whoever took the cows were aware of the daily routine and were able to avoid detection by the landowner.

It'e believed the cows were loaded onto a cattle liner right from the feedlot.

"All the cattle are tagged and bearing HOBBS brand so it would be difficult for someone to market them at any of the inspected markets," RCMP said in a release. "This suggests to investigators that the cows have not been slaughtered and have been moved to another location within or beyond Alberta."

Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers.
