A mother who authorities in New York believe kept her son sick so she could write about his struggles has pleaded not guilty to murdering the little boy with salt.

Lacey Spears, 26, was charged in Westchester County, N.Y., after her five-year-old son, Garnett, died in hospital of sodium poisoning on Jan. 23, The Journal News reports.

His death was ruled a homicide on April 30.

Spears had been suspected of poisoning her son with salt on at least two occasions, allegedly to keep him sick so she could blog, tweet and post about his health problems on Facebook to garner sympathy from strangers. She told followers her son had ear infections and digestive problems.

She's accused of feeding her son sodium through his feeding tube.

"This mother was intentionally feeding her son salt in toxic levels," Assistant District Attorney Doreen Lloyd told the court, adding Spears' online search history shows she researched how salt would affect her son.

She returns to court July 2.
