TROIS-RIVIERES, Que. — The woman who allegedly dressed as a nurse and kidnapped a newborn from a hospital in Trois-Rivieres, Que., burst into tears upon seeing her family during a court appearance Wednesday.

Valerie Poulin-Collins, 21, faces two counts of kidnapping after a woman dressed in scrubs tricked a couple into handing their child over at a hospital in May.

Her lawyer told court the proceedings have been difficult on his client.

Her mother and two sisters also broke down in court.

Poulin-Collins is set to return to court on July 7 for a bail hearing.

This week, the Trois-Rivieres hospital implemented a new electronic bracelet system in its maternity ward.
